Sunday 26th June 2011.

Well today we have gone mad and ordered a glomax satelite dome for the van. Over the Years and different vans Ive spent a few bob on 12 volt TVs fom 9 inch to  19 inch and all sorts of aerials, some good most rubbish. They all get relegated to the shed and then to the skip. Recently while on a rally in Dorset. the analogue signal was bad. So  out came the suitcase satellite job. Un pack all the bits. Fit the brackets onto my tripod secure this with tent pegs and a bungy, right that wont move, connect the dish and cable connect the sat finder, plug it into the outside connector. Back in the van  install my temp shelf above the TV, connect the satellite box, connect the aerial and the scart. Switch  TV and the sat box on tune TV to  scart. Now the fun starts find compas. lay out my satellite map under  the tripod. drop in the compass see where south is roughly line the dish to astra 28. check sat finder. Great its screaming like a banshee ,must be a good signal. step in the van. Screen shows no signal. Step outside , sat finder says 10 and screaming. move the dish east a little  back in the van. No signal back out move a bit more . All this time Mavis is looking at me in utter disgust. Wont be long luv soon be there. I am in the van out the van this performance was repeated for over an hour. When  by then I was huffing and cursing checking  all the connections over and over, Mavis said Why don’t you just chuck all that rubbish in the skip forget TV. So I disconnected all the bits ,cables clamps sat finder tripod dish sat box and literally  threw it all in a black sack and tossed it under the van for the remainder of the 5 days rally.

When we got home Mavis s was surfing as usual and said have you seen this  dome thing at Snellyvision that’s what you need.  Blimey I said look at the price. It was the glowmax manual  dome system. So I looked it up checked the user manual on a pdf when I got to the bit about easy to  set up using the sat finder, and table of elevation etc. I thought  Oh No more agro no way not for that sort of money.

Then I noticed there was a fully automatic one. it said  simply switch it on and in under 2 min’s it finds the signal and you are watching TV. Now I thought that’s cooking with gas. A quick chat with  Shane and my mind was made up. But  Shane was going on holiday and I had left it to late to order one

( so I thought). But late tonight Sunday Shane phoned me up to confirm I wanted to place the order. Yes please I said. with  details exchanged all done in a couple of minutes. Right it will be dispatched tomorrow for you. So now its sit and wait for the box. But  the days of walking round the van waving a dustbin lid  trying to get a signal are hopefully over. It says simple installation so  we will watch this space.

Well the dome was working fine. But I tried to add a remote switch. Then I had all sorts of trouble. couldnt find a signal and the noise from the roof was horible grinding and crunching. I put it back on a short power lead and  its ok again. So  there is a motto If it aint Broke dont Fix it.

Update : I fitted a remote switch and its ok.

Update August 2012. Its worked trouble free untill a couple of months back when it  often didnt find a signal. I put it down to trees or line of site. But on rally  in Stratford recently a knock on the van door where a stranger asked How do you find your Dome. Ok I said. Thinking he was interested in buying one. Do you always get a good signal. Well  no  lately I said. Did you know the sattelite had been moved?. No I didnt. He said you need to update the software. Oh dear. He said I can do that for you in 2 minutes waving a small 4gig card. Well thats bloody good of you. So after a quick unscrew job to reveal a slot I didnt know was there he soon had it  updated. Now I just turn it on and bingo  TV. No long faces from wife. No walking round the Van like a VIking warrior with shield held high.
